The trope of the damsel in distress, or princess locked in the tower, is a powerful and pervasive one. In this course, we will look at the role that women played in Medieval Europe between the 9th and 15th centuries. With a brief stop in the world of medieval romance, we'll look at women both fictional and historical to see the roles that women played within the court and in the village. Were they as helpless as we're made to think? Who were these women, and how different are their lives to ours today in terms of being able to make their own choices? Topics to be covered include: Week 1: Medieval Romance Week 2: The Witches Week 3: The Wives Week 4: Women at Court Week 5: Urban Women Week 6: Women in the Country If you have any questions, please contact Professor Yvonne Widenor at 716.888.2531 or widenory@canisius.edu
